Doctors explain Q&A to help you get pregnant
Q
If I have an intrauterine contraceptive device inserted, do I need to remove it beforehand? Does long-term use of birth control pills affect the accuracy of test?
A
If you have an intrauterine contraceptive device inserted, please consult our physician. The physician will evaluate based on the type and the condition of the intrauterine contraceptive device. We suggest that you stop the use of the medicine for one period of time before the tests of AMH and ultrasound checkup.
Q
Does it hurt to get ovulation-stimulating injection?
A
The feeling of pain varies from person to person, and different ovulation-stimulating injection makes a difference. Nevertheless, as the needles are thin, the pain is acceptable for most people.
Q
Does ovulation-stimulating injection make people become fat?
A
Ovulation-stimulating injection will cause most follicles to grow at the same time. The rise of hormones leads to water retention in the body, which creates the illusion of gaining weight. However, the edema is just temporary. Once the eggs are retrieved, the hormones in the body will be back to normal and the swelling will naturally subside.
Q
Will egg donation result in premature ovarian failure and affect the chances of pregnancy in the future?
A
For the most part, females of childbearing age produce an average of 10-20 basal ovarian follicles per month. Without taking medication, only one of them will mature and be excreted; the rest will atrophy. The aim of ovulation-stimulating injection is to allow the follicles and eggs that are about to atrophy to grow. Therefore, it will neither affect the number of egg reserves nor lead to premature ovarian failure.
Q
Does sperm donation affect the chances of pregnancy in the future?
A
Mature sperm is developed from spermatogonia. It takes about 64 days from cell development to maturity. Sperm is constantly reproduced in the body, so it won’t cause the decrease in fertility. Sperm donation doesn’t require the use of medication or invasive medical procedures. As a result, it won’t affect the activity of sperm.
Q
Does a consanguineous marriage occur owing to sperm donation?
A
To avoid the disorder of blood kins, Taiwan conducts an audit. The two parties mustn’t be direct relatives or in-laws, or collateral relatives within the fourth degree of kinship. It also rules that sperm mustn’t be provided for more than two couples and its use shall stop after the couple successfully gets pregnant. It shall be destroyed once a living birth is achieved. Consequently, the chance of a consanguineous marriage is very low, only one in five million.
Q
Is it allowed to specify a person for egg or sperm donation?
A
Article 13 of Taiwan’s Reproduction Act rules that medical institutions are banned from using reproductive cells donated by specific individuals upon the request of the couple undergoing the procedure. Simply put, it is against the law to demand the physician to use specified egg or sperm.
Q
Do I get to see the photos of the egg donor or get to know her background?
A
Taiwan’s Reproduction Act regulates that the donor’s information is strictly confidential. Only the objective condition such as health status, height, weight, blood type can be provided. Likewise, the recipient’s information is confidential and won’t be provided to the donor. The two parties do not know each other.
Q
Does the child derived from donated egg or sperm look completely different from the recipient in appearance?
A
We search for a suitable donor based on the recipient’s general condition, so there isn’t much difference in appearance. As half of the baby resembles the spouse in appearance, it won’t be a problem. The past cases demonstrate excellent parent-child relationship. We also screen for blood types to avoid trouble.
Q
Which is better, frozen eggs (stored in the egg preserve) or fresh ones?
A
The number of frozen eggs can be selected as required. The eggs can be thawed and fertilized after matching is completed. On the other hand, after fresh eggs are paired, the procedure can begin only after the recipient’s menstruation ends. The number of eggs retrieved varies. Thanks to the advanced technology in egg freezing, there is no difference in the success rate.
Q
Does the cost of in vitro fertilization treatment include egg donation or sperm donation?
A
The cost of egg donation is approximately NT$400,000 while that of sperm donation is NT$100,000.The cost isn’t included in the vitro fertilization treatment.
